In this interactive workshop, you'll be introduced to the critical and creative interventions within feminist archiving practice. Why have feminists found existing archives to be insufficient for recording and generating feminist history? What archival developments have emerged over the last (at least) 50 years to record, store and share feminist knowledge? The focus in the first part of the workshop will be on archival knowledge, methodology and practice, showcasing a range of different archives and asking how feminist archival forays have shaped recent understandings of the scope of archives themselves. In the second part, we will looks at your own emerging projects from an archival perspective: how might you draw on and/or generate archives to enrich your own feminist research? I will also introduce you to some of the archival work I have done over the last 30 years as part of demonstrating the different approaches that can be drawn on.

Clare Hemmings is Professor of Feminist Theory. She has been working at the Department of Gender Studies (formerly Gender Institute) since 1999. I have two main areas of research focus – feminist and queer studies – and am particularly interested in thinking through the relationship between these, as well as the ways in which both fields have been institutionalized at national and international levels. I’m currently working on two projects. The first, Inheritance: A Memory Archive engages questions of gender, sexuality, class-transition and nation through a series of short stories drawing on stories of family histories. The second, Unnatural Feelings: Anti-Gender and the Right intervenes in the narratives of ‘anti-gender’ mobilisations to highlight the role of affect in their success. It draws together a range of ‘anti-gender’ interventions with a specific focus on attacks on Gender Studies as a field of inquiry.

Clare Hemmings ist Professorin für Feministische Theorie. Sie arbeitet seit 1999 in der Abteilung für Gender Studies (ehemals Gender Institute). Ich habe zwei Forschungsschwerpunkte - feministische und Queer-Studien - und interessiere mich besonders für die Beziehung zwischen diesen beiden sowie für die Art und Weise, wie beide Bereiche auf nationaler und internationaler Ebene institutionalisiert wurden. Derzeit arbeite ich an zwei Projekten. Das erste, Inheritance: A Memory Archive, beschäftigt sich mit Fragen von Gender, Sexualität, soziale Mobilität und Nation durch eine Reihe von Kurzgeschichten, die auf Familiengeschichten basieren. Das zweite, Unnatural Feelings: Anti-Gender and the Right (Anti-Gender und die Rechte), greift in die Erzählungen von Anti-Gender-Mobilisierungen ein, um die Rolle des Affekts für ihren Erfolg hervorzuheben. Es vereint eine Reihe von "Anti-Gender"-Interventionen mit einem besonderen Fokus auf die Angriffe auf die Gender Studies als Forschungsgebiet.
